Some Advantages to Going Through Rehab Away From Home

While Waypoint Recovery Center is not terribly far from Raleigh/Durham and Wilmington, the modest distance may, in fact, provide several advantages for a person going through detox and rehab.

The potential advantages of seeking residential treatment away from home include:

  • Increased privacy. While we believe seeking treatment is something to be applauded rather than derided, we recognize that it may be easier to commit to treatment in a community where no one knows you.
  • Fewer distractions. While treatment for a substance use disorder is certainly not a vacation, seeking treatment in a different community offers some of the same advantages as going away on a trip. You can give yourself permission to focus entirely on yourself because you have left your daily responsibilities and challenges behind. This can give you the space you need—both internally and externally—to commit to making a real and lasting change in your life.
  • Separation from negative influences: Sometimes our habits—like drug or alcohol use—are tied to certain people, places, or activities. Taking a break from all of those things can make it easier to cut ties with the problematic substances. Also, there can be a safety issue involved if your drug use regularly brings you into contact with criminals or other users with a propensity for violence.
  • Type of facility and treatments available: Finding a facility that is a good match for you is an important part of the process. Among other things, it is important to investigate whether a facility offers ongoing support after treatment including, for example, alumni services.

A Note About Ongoing Follow-up Care

The good news is that Waypoint Recovery Center can refer you to resources in your home community to ensure there is no gap in your access to recovery support. At the same time, you will have the option to continue to be an active participant in the Waypoint community as well.
