Additional Resources

However, you may also find it useful to take advantage of the following Lowcountry addiction resources.

Charleston Center

Charleston County’s Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS), commonly referred to as the Charleston Center, offers education, intervention, and treatment for people struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. This Lowcountry resource provides counseling, medication assisted treatment, and transitional care. A special program is available for pregnant or parenting women suffering from chemical dependency, offering childcare for children up to five years of age while their mothers are seeking treatment.

Services are provided regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. Financial assessments, information on applicable payment plans, and assistance applying for relevant state services such as Medicaid are provided during the intake process.

Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston is home to the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs. Some of the Lowcountry services offered to the public include intensive outpatient therapy, a buprenorphine maintenance clinic for opiate dependent patients, and the ability to request participation in addiction treatment research studies or drug trials.

For family members who are concerned about a loved one’s drinking or drug use, department members can assistant in planning a safe and effective intervention. They can help address potential resistance to treatment, locate suitable treatment resources, and assist in deciding appropriate consequences for refusing addiction treatment.

Favor SC

Faces and Voices of Recovery South Carolina (FAVOR SC) advocates for South Carolina men and women in recovery. This organization was formed in 2006 and played a key role in advocating for the parity in insurance coverage for mental health and addiction law signed in 2008.

One particularly valuable service FAVOR SC offers is free recovery coaching by volunteer Certified Peer Support Specialists. Coaching is offered via peer support group meetings, telephone recovery support, and recovery-oriented systems of care.

Beach Church’s Celebrate Recovery

Beach Church offers weekly support meetings for people struggling with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, anger, eating disorders, gambling addiction, and other similarly destructive conditions. Participants meet on Friday evenings for a dinner, celebration worship service, and small group support.

All are welcome to attend the Celebrate Recovery events. Beach Church believes in walking through the pain of life together as you follow Christ, finding strength in shared faith instead of focusing on individual weaknesses and struggles.

Similar Celebrate Recovery programs are offered at other churches throughout the area. Visit the Celebrate Recovery website to search for the program nearest you.

The St. James Foundation

The St. James Foundation serves residents of James Island, Charleston, and the South Carolina Lowcountry. This faith-based organization is affiliated with the St. James Presbyterian Church (USA).

Issues tackled by The St. James Foundation include substance abuse as well as poverty, violence, and unemployment. Services are provided to people in need regardless of gender, age, race, or religion.

College of Charleston Collegiate Recovery Program

The Collegiate Recovery Program provides support services to students in addiction recovery seeking degrees from the College of Charleston. The program helps students stay substance-free by providing peer-to-peer support, group services, and a connection to the local recovery community.

Participating in the Collegiate Recovery Program helps promote accountability with weekly check-ins and a support system of peers who understand the struggles associated with staying sober and getting an education. Special sober activities planned both on and off campus offer a chance to relax and destress.

Magdalene House of Charleston

Magdalene House of Charleston offers housing and recovery support for women who are struggling with substance abuse as well as mental health disorders, poverty, domestic violence, and the effects of past incarceration. Services are supported by private grants, individual donations, and the work of a team of dedicated volunteers.

Magdalene House’s recovery services are divided into three phases: Initial, Intermediate, and Transitional. Completing the entire program takes approximately one year, depending on individual circumstances and specific recovery goals.

James Island Outreach

Low-income residents of James Island and Folly Beach are eligible for services from James Island Outreach, a charitable organization run by Charleston churches, nonprofits, and concerned individuals. Both crisis relief and ongoing assistance are available.

James Island Outreach can offer help in dealing with the effects of addiction, including needs for emergency food, medicine, and utility assistance. Volunteer counselors will also provide information about substance abuse treatment and ongoing recovery support upon request.
